History of Capel Bethania, Nant Gwynant, Snowdonia
Hanes o Gapel Bethania, Nant Gwynant, Eryri
In 1822 land was obtained for building the Chapel from the Mostyn Estate who owned the neighbouring farm Hafod y Llan. The land was on a 60 year lease. Money was collected for the purpose of building the Chapel - 6d from each maid and £3 from each farmer (£36 10s total), a loan of £160 and £10 from members. This gave a total of £206 10s. The cost of the building was £198 14s 10d, leaving £7 15s 2d in hand. Other costs included:
- 1828 - the chapel was painted for £5 10s.
- 1867 - the chapel was rebuilt and a room was built above. This cost £433 7s 6d.
- 1882 - the porch was added for £50.
- 1885 - the lease came to an end and Mostyn Estate wanted £400 for it. There was great concern and all assets were sold.
- 1887 - a man called J. W. Jones of London bought the Chapel, the house and 1003 square yards of land for £335.
- 1900 - the debt was £660 and the members numbered 101.
- 1916 - the Chapel was renovated again at a cost of £500.
- 1926 - the debt was cleared.

The chapel served as a school as well as a place of worship before the Education Act of 1871 when a council school was built ½ a mile away.
There was a religious revival in 1859 at the Hafod y Llan farm, along the track from the chapel. The number of members in 1858 was 56 and in 1890 it had increased to 91.
There was a constant call for donations and if none was forthcoming the shame was terrible. These included the seating (every family had its own seat for which they paid monthly), the debt, taxes, schooling, lights, communion, taking the children to meetings, Calvinistic payments, the bible society, the sisters' mission boxes, schedules, quarterly collections and once for the famine in Russia. If there was a crisis anywhere in the world money was collected for it.
In 1925 the temperance society was very strong; this had been going on since 1877, and a book of names was kept of those who did not participate in such social drinking.
Electricity came to the valley in February 1966 although Cwm Dyli power station had been nearby since 1906.
Ar y cychwyn roedd ysgol yn y capel hefyd hyd at y Ddeddf Addysg 1871 pan adeiladwyd ysgol y cyngor ½ milltir I ffwrdd.
Torrodd ddiwygiad allan ym 1859 yn Hafod y Llan, fferm ger y capel. Nifer yr aelodau ym 1858 oedd 56 ond 'roedd wedi cynyddu i 91 ym 1890.
Galwyd byth a hefyd am arian ac os na rhoddid 'roedd gwarth mawr. Cynhwysai hyn arian misol am y sedd deuluol, y ddyled, trethi, addysg, golau, cymundeb, mynd a'r plant i gyfarfodydd, taliadau calfinaidd, cymdeithas y Beiblau, blychau cenhadol y chwiorydd, rhaglenni, casgliadau chwarterol ac unwaith at newyn yn Rwsia. Os oedd argyfwng rhywle yn y byd yna cesglid arian tuag ato.
Ym 1925 roedd cymdeithas atal y ddiod feddwol yn gryf; 'roedd hyn mewn bodolaeth ers 1877, a chedwid llyfr o enwau y rhai a ataliai rhag y math yma o yfed cymdeithasol.
Daeth trydan i'r dyffryn ym 1966 er bod pwerdy yng Nghwm Dyli ers 1906.

To buy the chapel we had grant from CIST GWYNEDD a fund of the county council. To renovate it into a café we had grants from CRONFA ADFYWIO administered by the Wales Tourist Board (a plan to regenerate areas in the wake of the foot and mouth disease) and Objective 1 (a Welsh Assembly fund).
We have tried to keep the feel of the chapel by leaving the deacon's pew and pulpit in place. There were 104 seats in the place and we used the wood from the pews to make cupboards and chairs for the café. The porch was turned into toilets. The place was lit by oil lamps and for 31 years one who cleaned and filled these lamps every week was a Hannah Jones who lived in the chapel house.

I brynu'r Capel cawsom grant gan Cist Gwynedd, y Cyngor Sir. I'w atgyweirio yn gaffi cafwyd grantiau o gronfa ADFYWIO gai ei weinyddu gan y Bwrdd Twristiaeth (cynllun adfywio ardaloedd ar ôl y clefyd traed a'r genau) ac AMCAN 1 (cynllun y Cynulliad).
Rydym wedi ceisio cadw teimlad o'r Capel drwy gadw'r sêt fawr a'r pulpud. Daliai 104 o bobl yn y gynulleidfa. Defnyddiwyd prenniau'r seti i wneud cypyrddau, cadeiriau a desg. Trowyd y porth yn doiledau. Cyn cael trydan goleuwyd y lle gan lampau olew ac am 31 mlynedd gofalwyd am y rhain gan un Hannah Jones drigai yn y tŷ Capel.
